The Truth About Pine Shavings
The great pine shavings debate has been raging on the internet
for quite a while now and it appears many people were being
misled about the safety of using pine bedding.
The debate seems to have all started in a chat room on "rabbit.org".
Marinell Harrison lost an eighteen month old rabbit during a spaying.
This caused her to look for a cause. After elimination of other
factors, she determined that the pine bedding in the litter box was
the problem. She then tested her other rabbits for elevated
liver enzymes. This testing came back positive.
Since this time others have come forward to explain and dispel
this theory about pine bedding.
Carol Green, a rabbit breeder with a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology who researched drug metabolizing enzymes and has over
80 publications in the field, shed light on the subject.
Actually, reading the testing results and correctly interpreting
them reveal that many factors could raise those reading
levels in rabbits. Those include ammonia, chloroform, and a
contagious liver disease in some rabbits called hepatic
coccidiosis.
In closing, it has been determined that these claims were unfounded.
The good news is that the use of pine bedding with our animals
is totally SAFE!
